A shared reality is necessary for a functional society.

You can only build that shared reality when there is trust.

Trust depends on truth, and truth depends on fact.

Facts come from documentation.

This is why, despite all appearances to the contrary, one of the most effective ways to fight misinformation and disinformation is to state the facts.

Misinformation here is defined as something a person says, that they're mistaken about.

Disinformation is something a person says that is intentionally false.

See the difference?

Regardless of which you encounter, remember that arguments do not change minds.

Facts do.

Eventually.

That's why it's important not to waste time convincing or attacking anyone who's dug in to their beliefs.

Instead, find people who are on the fence. If you want the best chance to persuade anyone, you just need to know four things:

1.Be kind.

2.Take a legitimate interest in the person you're speaking with,

3.And bring the facts.

We'll talk about that fourth thing in a future book.
